MANAGING A POULTRY BUSINESS FOR PROFIT

This course is aimed at people who want to start their own broiler or layer business, or those who are already farming with poultry but need to improve their business skills. The course is presented in English at level 3 and is therefore suitable for those who have passed grade 11 and are literate in English and mathematics. Some knowledge of Excel spreadsheets would be useful but is not essential.

The course covers the following topics:

  • An overview of the poultry industry in South Africa
  • Assessing a business opportunity in your area
  • Choosing the right location
  • Researching the local market
  • Analysis of strengths and weaknesses
  • Essential entrepreneurial skills – do you have them?
  • Finding your competitive advantage
  • Writing a business plan for a poultry farm
  • The importance of accurate production records
  • Production records for broilers and layers
  • The business cycle
  • Predicting your cash flow
  • Understanding balance sheets and income and expense statements
  • Financial ratios
  • Managing your cash flow
  • Sources of finance for farmers
  • Understanding the markets – formal and informal
  • Price elasticity of eggs and broilers
  • Finding a niche market
  • Making a profit

The course will be run as a one-week workshop with group discussions, short written tasks, calculations and interactive spreadsheets. All examples and case studies are specific to poultry and each delegate will be encouraged to apply the principles to his or her own unique circumstances. The aim is to stimulate the delegate to plan a strategy for his or her own business, giving a clear picture of how to proceed.

The delegate will be taught how to do simple production forecasts and predicted cash flows using Excel spreadsheets. These templates may be taken home for future use.

(Please note that training on the day-to-day management of broiler and layer flocks is done in a separate Poultry Production Short Course that runs every month.)

If you are interested in attending please phone Tessa Smythe on 033-346 0049 to book your place.
