Poultry Production ; Commercial Layers:
Brooding, bird health, bio-security, diseases, vaccinating,
feed, water, litter management, lights, ventilation, cleaning,
house designs, book-keeping and record keeping
Hatchery:
Microbiology and fertility of eggs, nest management, egg collection,
handling, storage and grading, setting, incubation, hatching
process, processing day old chicks, record keeping and bio-security
Poultry Business Skills [NEW COURSE):
Overview of the industry, planning, writing a business plan,
market research, production and financial records, cash flow
and budgeting, profit and loss, marketing
These informative courses are highly recommended for emerging
farmers, extension officers, supervisors and trainee farmers/farm
managers as they provide a very good basic general knowledge
of what has to be done, why it has to be done and when it
has to be done. Visual and practical assignments are emphasised.
As well as formal lectures, there are visits, where applicable,
to the KZNPI farm where procedures are demonstrated. The team
of facilitators is highly trained and experienced.
NQF Level 3 delegates will complete written tests during
the week. The understanding and competency of the NQF level
1 delegates will be assessed daily. On completion of the course,
all students will receive a certificate.
VENUE – KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute,
Bisley, Pietermaritzburg.
COST – R2985.00 This applies to all
delegates and includes lunches, teas and training material.
Should delegates require accommodation at KZNPI then an additional
R765.00 is required. This amount will cover breakfasts and
dinners as well as single room accommodation. Delegates must
bring their own bed linen, blankets, pillow, towel and toiletries.
APPLICATIONS – Limited to 12 applicants
per course - if less than 7, the course will be c/f to next
date.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS -
For NQF 1 – it is an advantage to be
able to speak English, but not a requirement. Courses can
be conducted in Zulu though the notes are in English.
For NQF 3 – applicants must be able
to read and write in English and operate a calculator.

In-house training can be arranged for 10-13 registrants.
The
contents of the different courses that will be presented are
broadly as follows:
Hatchery management - Hatchability of hatching
eggs (farm factors, storage and handling practices), incubation
(gaseous environment and humidity), development of embryos
and day old chick quality.
Commercial Layers - Handling point-of-lay
pullets, environmental factors, lighting programs, nutrition,
role of water, eggshell and internal egg quality, health management,
record-keeping.
Breeder Management - Bio-security and vaccination,
ventilation, photoperiods, feeding programs, hatchability
of hatching eggs and record-keeping practices.
Broiler Production Day-old chick quality,
brooding and early feed/water intake, ventilation and environmental
management, feeding programs, health management, harvesting
of broilers and record-keeping.
Learners (delegates) that are found to be competent after
the course will be awarded a certificate issued by the KwaZulu-Natal
Poultry Institute.
The KZNPI is registered with AgriSETA as an accredited training
provider. The course material is aligned with the SAQA unit
standards and has been verified by AgriSETA. The huge benefit
to the poultry industry is that organisations that have registered
a workplace skills plan (WSP) with the AgriSETA are able to
claim back 40% of the levies paid over to SARS, for details
