The KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute held its graduation ceremony

The KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute is situated in Pietermaritzburg and the Institute’s Poultry Management Training Centre recently held the graduation ceremony for this year’s learnership students.
Joe Spencer reports:

The increasing demand for affordable animal protein and the conviction that poultry provides the best means of providing this at an affordable price led to the formation of the Institute in 1992. This formation, with the objective of advancing the efficiency of poultry production in South Africa, had the wholehearted support of the industry. The training centre was introduced to meet the need for training to a level below University degrees. According to the Institute’s General Manager Lorraine Giles, this year’s batch of learnership students was the most enthusiastic and focussed that she has encountered. All 23 qualified for the National Certificate: Poultry Production NQF level 3, which is a SAQA qualification issued by the AgriSETA, and she thanked Rainbow Chicken Ltd for the sponsorship of the learnership.

As a group project the students were divided into five teams who reared batches of day old chicks to broilers. The project included presentations by the teams on all aspects of rearing and preparing the broilers for sale.

Winners of the team competition were presented with their award by the President of the KZN Poultry Institute, Mr Seo Mtetwa. They are (left to right) Njabulo Buthelezi, Bongumusa Manqele, Thobelani Hlophe, Ayanda Ngema and Precious Hlongwane.
