The course deals with basic poultry production, covering:
- Brooding of chicks, Bird health, Bio-security, Common
poultry diseases, Vaccinating
- Looking after birds: feed, water, litter management, lights
and ventilation
- Cleaning of chicken houses, Chicken house designs
- Book-keeping and record keeping
The course is highly recommended for extension officers,
supervisors, emerging farmers, trainee farmers/farm managers.
Emphasis is placed on hands-on application of operating skills
as well as a general understanding of what has to be done,
why it has to be done and when it has to be done. Visual and
practical assignments are emphasised. The daily program includes
lectures as well as farm visits where every procedure is demonstrated.
Learners are expected to participate and demonstrate what
has been learnt. Learners are exposed to different types of
equipment, facilities, group work as well as all the poultry
disciplines. The team of facilitators comprises highly trained
and very experienced people with a great many years of experience
in the industry. NQF Level 3 learners will complete written
tests during the week. The understanding and competency of
the NQF level 1 learners will be assessed daily. On completion
of the course, all students will receive either a SUCCESSFUL
or ATTENDED certificate.

19 – 23 April 2010 - Hatchery Course
(Manage Hatching Eggs for Setting)
VENUE – KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute,
Bisley, Pietermaritzburg.
COST – R2580.00 This applies to all
learners. This includes all lunches, teas and training material.
Should learners require accommodation an additional R650.00
is required, this includes breakfasts and dinners. Learners
must bring their own bed linen, blankets, pillow, towel and
toiletries. All courses start on Monday morning 8:30 a.m.
APPLICATIONS – Limited to 25 applicants
per course – less than 10 the course to be c/f to next
date.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS -
For NQF 1 – it is an advantage to be
able to speak English, but not a requirement. Courses can
be conducted in Zulu though the notes are in English.
For NQF 3 – applicants must be able
to read, write in English, and operate a calculator.
