We are very proud to have run our first Abattoir Management Course, made possible through generous funding from the World Poultry Foundation.
The mix of theory and practical work was a hit with the delegates. Facilitators Henry Trusler, Charity Sibanda and Bryn Reece-Edwards handled the theory and on-site practicals. We were also very grateful to have various experts in the Industry share their knowledge. Don Taylor of Rotomaster, and Anthony Smith of Processing Solutions demonstrated the equipment and layout of a low throughput abattoir. Edwin Nzimande from Avi-Pharm Natal CC spoke about the abattoir sanitation. Pranesh Moodley and James Wood from MBB Consulting Engineers shared the process and requirements for drawing up abattoir plans.
We were also grateful to use Royal Chicks Abattoir in Camperdown, with James Mvelase (retired abattoir inspector) to demonstrate and oversee the slaughter process.
Some of the feedback from delegates:
-Thanks a million times, this was a ticket for us to the real world and it was a gift for life and now we will be able to feed the nation -I really appreciate the opportunity that the sponsor has offered for me to gain such valuable information in the poultry industry. It will help me to start my own business and be able to contribute to employment of the youth and women -I highly recommend the course to all individuals that want to start or operating abattoir. The course outlines all the crucial info and steps that need to be taken into consideration.
