BIOSECURITY TRAINING SUPPORTS POULTRY FARMERS IN THE WESTERN CAPE

The KZN Poultry Institute presented a three-day Biosecurity training programme, in the Western Cape, from 23 to 25 March 2026. The training was attended by 27 poultry farmers from a range of production systems.
Delegates were all existing poultry farmers, managing flocks ranging in size from 25 to 2,500 birds. The course provided guidance on strengthening biosecurity measures that can help protect poultry health and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.
The Institute extends its appreciation to the Western Cape Department of Agriculture for making its auditorium available as the training venue and for assisting delegates with transport, helping to ensure that more farmers were able to attend the course.

The training focused on developing a clear understanding of the importance of biosecurity throughout the poultry production cycle. Topics included the consequences of poor biosecurity, identifying potential risks, and implementing effective biosecurity practices on poultry farms. Delegates were encouraged to evaluate their current systems and identify opportunities to strengthen their biosecurity protocols.
Participants were actively involved throughout the programme, contributing to discussions, asking questions, and sharing their own experiences. Their enthusiasm and willingness to engage created an interactive learning environment that encouraged the exchange of ideas and practical solutions.
Feedback from delegates indicated that the course had a positive impact on their understanding of biosecurity and highlighted areas where improvements could be made on their own farms.

“It has made me aware of the mistakes we are currently making and how to fix these issues. Mistakes were pointed out, but better ways and solutions were also presented.”
Another delegate said:
“The course was excellent, easy to understand, and gave me a lot of information I did not know.”
Responses from the course evaluations suggested that participants left with a broader understanding of biosecurity and greater confidence in applying effective practices within their own poultry enterprises.
