COMMERCIAL LAYER TRAINING
25 to 29 MAY 2026

The KZN Poultry Institute hosted a Commercial Layer Training course from 25 to 29 May 2026 at its training centre in Pietermaritzburg.

Nine delegates attended the five-day course. Most were existing layer farmers looking to build on their knowledge and improve their farming practices. One delegate travelled from Malawi to take part in the training.
The course covered a range of topics relevant to commercial egg production, including poultry welfare, biosecurity, feed management, water quality, egg storage and handling, and general flock management. The programme included both classroom sessions and practical demonstrations, giving delegates the opportunity to apply what they had learned.

Delegates were actively involved throughout the week, asking questions and sharing their own experiences, which contributed to useful discussions during the course.

Four delegates attended the training with the assistance of a 40% subsidy provided by the World Poultry Foundation (WPF), helping to make the course more accessible.
Feedback from participants was positive, with one delegate commenting:
“Thank you for such an offering. You have tailored the course in such a way that in a week one acquires quality, well-rounded knowledge, both theory and practical.”
Another participant appreciated the practical component of the training:
“The practical material was really informative.”

A delegate who received the subsidy said:

”The subsidy went a long way, especially for me as a private farmer.”

Another participant added:

”I am thankful for the opportunity to learn and grow my business. The knowledge I received here will definitely benefit my growth.”

The commercial layer training programme is one of the KZN Poultry Institute’s regular training programmes, aimed at providing farmers with practical knowledge and skills to support their farming operations.
