KZNPI Supports UKZN Student Learning and Research

The KwaZulu-Natal Poultry Institute (KZNPI) continues to strengthen its commitment to agricultural education and skills development by providing University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) students with practical learning opportunities that bridge the gap between academic study and industry experience.

During June 2026, KZNPI welcomed third-year UKZN student Miss Thandukwazi Mlambo for a five-day practical exposure at the Institute’s training farm in Pietermaritzburg.

Throughout her 5 days, Miss Mlambo participated in the daily operations of the Institute’s hatchery, breeder, broiler and layer production units. Working alongside experienced KZNPI staff, she gained first-hand insight into poultry management practices, biosecurity protocols and the day-to-day responsibilities involved in maintaining successful poultry production systems.

The practical experience enabled her to apply the theoretical knowledge gained through her university studies in a real production environment, while developing valuable technical skills and a broader understanding of the poultry industry’s various production sectors.

KZNPI was impressed by Miss Mlambo’s enthusiasm, positive attitude and willingness to learn.

Reflecting on her experience, she said, “My favourite time was spent in the hatchery. Before coming here, I was mostly interested in broilers.”

She added that the breeder unit proved to be her greatest challenge, commenting, “The part I least enjoyed was working with the breeders.”

Her honest reflections highlight the value of practical exposure in helping students discover where their interests lie while gaining appreciation for every aspect of poultry production.

In addition to hosting Miss Mlambo, KZNPI also supported another UKZN student, Mr Abiodun Ojo, with his academic research. The Institute provided him with faecal samples to assist with his research and laboratory analysis, demonstrating KZNPI’s continued support for scientific research and innovation within the poultry sector.

These initiatives form part of KZNPI’s mission to advance agricultural education, promote research and foster skills development across Africa’s poultry industry. By partnering with tertiary institutions such as UKZN, the Institute is helping to equip the next generation of poultry professionals with the practical knowledge, technical competence and industry experience needed to contribute to a sustainable and growing poultry sector.

KZNPI remains committed to creating meaningful learning opportunities that prepare students for successful careers while supporting the continued advancement of the poultry industry.
